Experts at the University of East Anglia recently launched a new weapon in the fight against the deadly ash disease which threatens to wipe out 80 million UK trees, has seen ash imports to the UK suspended and large-scale tree felling tabled. But quick thinking environmental specialists at UEA’s Adapt Low Carbon Group have come up with a new smartphone app which will not only help monitor the spread of disease, but allow conservationists to target infected areas.
The free ‘Ashtag’ app will make it possible for anyone to take a photo of diseased leaves, shoots or bark and send it remotely to plant pathologists to identify whether or not the tree is infected. As well as collecting photographic evidence, the app also uses geo-tagging software to give a precise location of infected trees – allowing researchers and authorities to build up a picture of where the dieback is happening. This can then be used to target areas for culling to stop the spread of the disease.

Design competition for a Lighting Master plan for the future urban development of Kruunuvuorenranta as a part of Helsinki. On the site, a former oil harbour, a new residential area will be built containing 10.000 houses and its neighbourhood facilities. The assignment consists of a Lighting Master plan which could give guidance to the development of Kruunuvuorenranta by: creating a functional lighting plan and introducing an attractive nightscape seen from a distance.

A working, educational landscape that re-uses demolition debris in the construction of a “landfill garden” utilizing concrete planks sawn from an existing ash storage tank and crushed asphalt from an existing parking area, both of which were removed to make way for the new project . The use of these materials in the garden diverted approximately 90 tons of debris from Rhode Island’s Central Landfill. The garden, located to the south of the Narragansett Bay Commission’s new Operations Center, performs as a water retention and filtration system integrated with an outdoor room for staff and for educational groups that frequently tour the center.
