New terminal for Mumbai port faces criticism from urban planners | News | Down To Earth magazine

Mumbai port is set to expand. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given it the clearance to build an offshore container terminal, which will facilitate handling of large container vessels at the port. Mumbai Port Trust officials are happy because the Rs 1,228.39-crore project will add capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per annum to the port. Urban planners and activists, however, had hopes that some portion of the port land would be given to the city.

According to the Urban Design Research Institute (udri), a Mumbai-based ngo, the city has 0.01 ha of open space per 1,000 people, against the international norm of 1.6 ha per 1,000 people.

Landscape Sacrificial – Landscape Institute

The Landscape Institute called for a greater role for the profession in response to the Government’s ‘Draft Strategy for Sustainable Construction.’

Chair of the Landscape Institute Policy Committee Jon Lovell said landscape was often “the sacrificial lamb” on projects, which undermined both the environmental and commercial value of developments.

Responding to the document produced by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Lovell said: “Landscape is the glue which holds development schemes together and should be a first consideration and not an afterthought when developing a new scheme.”

National Parks Conservation Association Reveals New Vision to Rebuild Flamingo in Everglades National Park

This week, Everglades National Park is hosting public meetings to gather input from stakeholders on their Flamingo Commercial Services Plan. The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) today announced its support to develop a “New Flamingo,” consistent with the park’s Alternative C in the Flamingo Commercial Services Plan. The national parks group has also identified six basic principles that should further guide the redevelopment of Flamingo.

“The redevelopment of Flamingo will depend on many factors, including limited funding and high insurance costs,” said National Parks Conservation Association Regional Director John Adornato. “The new Flamingo should leave a reduced footprint, incorporate “green” architecture, and restore the park’s natural habitats.”
