The investment in covering a roof with soil and plants can pay off through mitigating stormwater runoff, lessening the heat island effect and offsetting interior heating and cooling costs.
In order to verify that a green roof is indeed providing the benefits to justify the investment, it’s important to monitor performance.

Daily Commercial News reports that “A recent study done at the University of Texas at Austin, shows that while green roofs are capable of significant thermal moderation, not all are equally capable of retaining stormwater.”

Landscape architect Rob Breeden said he designed the 6,000-square-foot roof to be unique in various ways — all of the plants are either drought-tolerant or cold-hardy, and custom planters have a unique soil mix that will keep them light even after watered to ease pressure on the roof structure”

VEGETABLE patches in the hallway and gardens on the rooftops are among the proposals being lined up for the redevelopment of Leith Docks.
The architects behind the framework for the massive development of the area want to introduce environmental aspects that will provide a “new way of living”.

But two Cal State Long Beach engineering
professors aim to fix that problem with their design for a high-efficiencyefficient turbine that can generate electricity from the much-slower wind speeds in urban areas.
The device, which professors Hamid Rahai and Hamid Hefazi recently patented, could use the wind energy along beaches, near freeways or on top of buildings, street lights or billboards to generate power for urban use.
