Seagull nests will be destroyed under plans to tackle aggressive birds in towns and cities, it was revealed.
Environment minister Michael Russell outlined plans to destroy nests and discourage breeding on a visit to Dumfries, a town he said had a long-standing gull problem.

Urgent action is needed to remove pollutants from urban wastewater, which is often used in cities to grow food, an international study has warned.
Data collected by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) found that 85% of cities discharged the water without any appropriate treatment.

With the completion next spring of the new convention centre in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour, there will be a few blocks of new parkland added to the city — but they’re strictly for the birds and the bees.
The expansion project, west of the current convention centre, is being topped off with a 2.4-hectare green — or “living” — roof that covers the flat, sloping segmented roof, and will be the second-largest in North America, next to a Michigan Ford plant covered with grass patches.

Public parks within superblocks run by private developers can alleviate the lack of green public space and help urban revitalization, an expert said Friday.
“The city administration needs to revitalize the city but doesn’t have the cash. So permitting private superblocks is a part of urban revitalization,” University of Indonesia economist Faisal Basri said at the launch of Podomoro City, a superblock in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta.

Chen Zhili, head of the Beijing Olympic Village, received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold award here on Wednesday presented by the U.S. Green Building Council.
On behalf of the council, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson honored the award to Chen, who is also vice president of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the 29th Olympic Games (BOCOG).
Chen noted that the concept of “Green Olympics, High-Tech Olympics and People’s Olympics” has been fully implemented at the Beijing Olympic Games. The award affirmed the cooperation between China and the United States in clean energy technology for Olympic Games.
