Located in the outskirts of Chennai, India, Confluence is a unique project in its scale and aspiration. Conceived as a resort destination it also contains a convention building with a large lawn. The villa zone overlooks a lush central garden with series of pavilions and platforms terminating at the swimming pool in front of the club house building.

This landscape jewel in a tiny, previously unused space between curving planes of house walls, once a forgotten space, has become a treasured outdoor room, abound with color, form, texture, art and nature. The garden showcases and celebrates desert morphology and the astoundingly beautiful genus that thrive in the harsh arid environment. The design balances the client’s desire to honor and respect the geometry of the original architecture designed by Will Bruder, whilst creating a contemporary courtyard that provides a place to retreat and relax, but is also viewed from within the residence as a living sculpture.

The renovated Burnaby Children Centre’s Daycare at Hanna Court playground provides an innovative, creative childcare play space for 3-5 year old. The design encourages children to use the entire space for play including: covered outdoor space for art and learning, a play “stream” and stick “forest” with native planting for contact with nature; formal play structure, and alphabet trike path to encourage play and motor skill development. SD worked with the client and the City of Burnaby to address a number of site engineering and security issues that existed prior to the redesign. To create such a unique space out of the small area has been one of the main challenges for this project. One of the strategies is to give the new definition and artistic approach to ordinary landscape elements. One of that is the boundary wall. The boundary wall here is perceived not only as the demarcation line but also an art form which wrapping around the project.

Recently, the 15th edition of the International Garden Festival opened presenting 22 contemporary gardens at Les Jardins de Métis / Reford Gardens. Imagined by sixty-five designers from Seoul, Santiago de Compostela, New York, Philadelphia, Basel, Amsterdam, Paris and Montreal, these installations invite visitors to enter and contemplate new ways of seeing the landscape and the world.
