Topos to present Landscape Awards in Reykjavik – Topos

Topos will be presenting its Topos Landscape Award 2009 in a ceremony at the Topos Design and Sustainability Symposium on 26 June in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The symposium, which will be taking place in the Nordic House Culture Centre built by Alvar Aalto in 1968, is being held in collaboration with FILA, the Icelandic Landscape Architecture Association, at the invitation of the Nordic Council.

The speakers include Jenny Osuldsen, Antje Stokmann, Eelco Hooftman, Bart Brands, Philip Coxall, Adrian McGregor and others, and an excursion to landscape projects in the Reykjavik area is being offered as part of the symposium on 27 June.

Gallery of Australian Design opens in Canberra

A new gallery showcasing Australian Design has been opened in Canberra known as the Gallery of Australian Design. The Gallery is a partnership between National Museum of Australia, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), Australian Institute of Architects,  and the University of Canberra.

National President of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, Mr Neil Hobbs, is delighted at the opportunity to be able to present the best of Australian design. “Having such a facility in the centre of Canberra will showcase the best of Australia’s designers to the public.  It will also allow enhanced collaboration between design disciplines.”


Foster + Partners and Buro Happold joint venture to design four stations for Saudi Arabia’s new Haramain High-speed Railway

Foster + Partners and Buro Happold joint venture has been appointed to design four stations along a new high speed railway line in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which will link the cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah. The Haramain High-speed Railway (HHR) is a major infrastructure project, conceived to forge new social and economic links by dramatically cutting journey times between the cities in western Saudi Arabia and by providing a new transport option for many of the pilgrims making the journey to the religious cities of Makkah and Madinah.

Bridge Vlaardingse Vaart officially opened – West 8

“Saturday the 18th of April the new pedestrian bicycle bridge ‘The Twist’, designed by West 8 for the City of Vlaardingen, was officialy opened at the shores of the Vlaardingse Vaart in Vlaardingen, The Netherlands. In February the iconic bridge was already installed at its final destination becoming an expressive sculpture that establishes the moment of ‘crossing’. Now people can also use the bridge to cross the Vlaardingse Vaart as it is a crucial link within the regional bicycle path network.”

World-class educational legacy unveiled for Olympic Village – London 2012

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and Lend Lease released new images today of a world-class education campus to be built within the Olympic Village.

The Olympic Village, which lies adjacent to the Olympic Park and Stratford City sites, will accommodate athletes during the 2012 Games and will leave the legacy of thousands of new homes, parks, and community facilities after 2012. At the heart of the community facilities to be left in legacy will be Chobham Academy – a world-class new education campus. The Academy is scheduled to open in September 2013.

Chobham Academy has been designed by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (who designed the Stirling Prize-shortlisted Westminster Academy), and landscape designers Kinnear Landscape Architects. BAM are the preferred bidder for the construction contract for Chobham Academy.

Ecological Urbanism @ Harvard GSD

The sold-out Ecological Urbanism conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Design opened on April 3 and will continue until today April 5.

Speakers at the conference include Rem Koolhaas (OMA), Pierre Bélanger(U Toronto), Michelle Addington (Yale), Homi Bhabha (Harvard), Mohsen Mostafavi, Chris Reed (Stoss).
