New York luring developers with landscape

New York is creating new parks in Queens at Hunter Point South to lure developers and then tenants to the area. Weiss/Manfredi are the landscape architects for the project and the New York Times recently quoted Michael Manfredi as saying

“The city needed to signal to a fairly skittish development community that it’s serious about this project,” a partner in the New York firm Weiss/Manfredi, the landscape architects on the project along with Thomas Balsley Associates. “Unlike most projects, where open space follows housing and lots of charged debate, here the open space comes first.”

SWA urban design project in Anning, China starts construction

The principal government of Miyi County in Sichuan Province, China, just north of Kunming, has started construction on the first phase of a 330-hectare (1.3 square miles) new-town designed by SWA Group’s Los Angeles office utilizing historical ecologies as well as technology innovation to create a more sustainable community.

£1.5 billion contract awarded for regeneration of Elephant & Castle

London Borough of Southwark announced that they have awarded the £1.5 billion (circa A$2.7 billion) regeneration of Elephant & Castle to Lend Lease.

The project is one of the most significant schemes of its type in Europe, comprising over 300,000 square metres of new build, mixed-use development, together with major infrastructure improvements and a range of enhanced community facilities. The location, within two miles of London’s West End, is unrivalled for a development of this scale.

The scheme comprises six phases. The first phase demolition is scheduled to commence in February 2010. Detailed planning consent for the first phase is expected to be achieved by April 2011. Both parties have expressed their commitment to work together on the redevelopment of all six phases of the site.

Sydney Metro have released sample designs for Pyrmont and Rozelle metro stations are now online following a second successful design principles workshop.

The three different visions for how the stations might look were developed during the workshop process, which was held to develop draft design principles to guide future station design.

The draft principles cover a range of issues including built form, materials, heritage, public art and landscaping. They will help ensure that stations are user-friendly for passengers, visually attractive and fit in with the surrounding area.

The NSW Government Architect and Chairman of Sydney Metro’s Design Review Panel, Peter Mould, said the sample designs had been developed by three design teams each comprising a top architect, landscape architect and public artist in order to test the design principles.
