FED_SCRAPER re-envisions the Washington DC National Mall, where federal program is cleared from the mega-blocks to be situated within the mall-void. This allows mega blocks to be returned to a densely knitted interwoven fabric to take back these areas of the city. Federal program thus becomes contained within the National Mall, putting physical limits on the exacerbated growth of the Federal Government.

The proposed Colorado Avenue Esplanade Project will integrate the Expo Light Rail into the Downtown, streamlining the existing intersection functions and guiding passengers to their business, shopping, cultural and entertainment destinations. The project accomplishes this with a combination of major urban design improvements at the Downtown Expo Station Plaza and along Colorado Avenue between 4th Street and Ocean Avenue. The improvements organize and simplify the flow of pedestrians, vehicles and bicycles, and provide more detailed directional cues such as new signage and green street improvements that clarify pathways, improve wayfinding, enhance landscaping, and provide public art.

Stretching along Manhattan’s west side, Riverside Park South is an urban miracle on the Hudson and the last link in Manhattan’s west side greenway. Its creation involved working with local and state government agencies, community groups, stakeholders and the client to create a vibrant new public space that reintroduced the community to the water’s edge and responded to the unique industrial history and riparian ecology of the site.

Taylor Cullity Lethlean were engaged in 2007 to assist DTEI in the preparation of a reference design for the urban and landscape design component of the Northern Expressway. Taylor Cullity Lethlean formed a team involving architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, lighting specialist Bluebottle, sculptor Robert Owen and illustration artist Robin Eley. All work was lead and managed by Taylor Cullity Lethlean. A highly collaborative process was undertaken with DTEI staff, particularly NEXY landscape architect Jordana Wilson. Extensive collaboration also occurred with environmental managers, structural and civil engineers.

Recently the finalists for the ARC International Wildlife Crossing Infrastructure Design Competition were selected to continue into Phase 2 of the competition to develop conceptual designs and 3-D models for a wildlife overpass at West Vail Pass along Interstate Highway 70 near Vail, Colorado. The designs are intended to usher in a new generation of wildlife crossing infrastructure using new methods, new materials, and new thinking to reduce structural costs and increase adaptability and ecological function. The five finalist teams are:

Last week the City of Seattle announced the shortlist of finalists for the role of lead designer. The four shortlisted teams are led by the following firms:
– Gustafson Guthrie Nichol
– James Corner Field Operations
– Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates
– Wallace Roberts & Todd
The shortlist was established through careful consideration of Statements of Qualifications submitted by 30 teams for the project. The team ultimately selected by the City will lead a design process for more than nine acres of new waterfront public space and a new surface street on Alaskan Way.
