Canada’s biggest green roof was technically challenging: LA

Journal of Commerce reports

The biggest living roof in Canada is surrounded by water on three sides, and the marine deck on which the building sits is supported by stilt-like piles. It also features slopes of up to 53 per cent.

Bruce Hemstock, of PWL Partnership, a Vancouver landscape architecture and consulting firm that worked on the project, said the roof portion of the job was one of the most technically challenging assignments his firm has taken on in its 35 years in the business.

Landscape Architecture professor travels North America studying urban agriculture

Professor Karen Landman, a landscape architecture professor from University of Guelph recently travelled across North America to study Urban Agriculture. Travelling some 18,000 kilometres(11,185 km) across western USA and Canada to see how food was grown commercially in cities.

An Urban Agriculture Symposium is being held at the University of Guelph at the Arboretum on Friday 20 November from 8:30am to 5:30pm at which Professor Karen Landman will give a lecture along with other presenters. However, the cut off date for registration was last Friday, 13th November.

West 8+MRIO Planting 8000 trees & participating in Xian IHE 2011

West 8+MRIO plant 8000 pine trees in Madrid
West 8+MRIO recently started with the planting of 8,000 pine trees for the Salon the Pinos in Madrid, Spain. As part of the master plan West 8+MRIO designed for the reclaimed riverbanks and the new urban area above the M30 motorway, the Salon de Pinos will act as a spiral cord, connecting the various park areas included in the design.

Xian International Horticultural Exhibition

West 8 have also announced that they will be participating in the Xian International Horticultural Exhibition from April 9 to October 9, 2011.

The theme of Xi’an International Horticultural Exhibition 2011 is “Harmonious Coexistence Of City And Nature “. The Exhibition will create a plant-dominated natural landscape, highlighting the history, culture and local characteristics of Xi’an, displaying the harmonious coexistence of city and nature, andexploring the future development of harmonious coexistence among human, city, landscape and nature.

Naples Botanical Garden Set to Open – November 14

Naples Botanical Garden

The Naples Botanical Garden (that WLA previously reported on) will be officially opened to the public at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2009.

“This is the world’s first significant tropical botanical garden to open in decades and the only garden in the U.S. with a superstar design team,” Holley commented. “They have created a world-class tropical paradise that is not
only a sensory delight but also a place for recreation, reflection and education for today and generations to come.” The cost for this phase of the Garden’s development is $36 million.
