Urban Physic Garden pops-up for the community

Urban Physic Garden London

This summer the designers of the Union Street Urban Orchard will return to 100 Union Street, Southwark in London to transform a derelict site into the Urban Physic Garden, a pop-up community built garden celebrating medicinal plants, which will host an on-site cafe and summer festival of events. The Urban Physic Garden will be shaped by the hospital and the pharmacy, with a focus on medicinal plants and herbs. From wild seeds in vacant lots to domestic herbs found in back gardens to exotic species gathered around the world, plants have been used to cure all kinds of ills -from traditional remedies in teas and tonics to the latest cutting-edge pharmaceutical treatments.

The Urban Physic Garden was designed and produced by Wayward Plants, a collective of designers, artists and urban growers under the creative direction of landscape architect Heather Ring. The garden will be host to a range of invited artists projects, including the return of Oliver Bishop-Young’s ping-pong skip and a UK premier of the play-structures designed by the Serbian collective Skart, previously shown at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Within the context of a larger historic estate, 17th Century manor house, and landscaped gardens that are often open to the public, the 5 Hectare meadow garden used an area where silt from the adjacent dredged lake had been dumped and spread. Outbuildings were demolished and sight lines adjusted so that the new vistas from the centre of the meadow segments aligned on other key landscape features, either distant or near. The spiral mound at the centre allows visitors to get an overview. Rings of cherry trees help reinforce the circular pathways around the meadows. A new lake edge path runs up to a giant igloo shaped steel arbour where willows are being trained to enclose the outer form.

EATHOUSE | De Stuurlui stedenbouw and Atelier Gras

A house and garden to eat, that you are able to touch, smell, taste, seed, weed, and harvest! EATHOUSE is a house in a garden that attracts visitors with delicious vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. We want to seduce people and make them taste the edible garden and the edible house. EATHOUSE has a temporary character; it lasts a summer season. This is why all the materials used in EATHOUSE can be re-used for a new season of EATHOUSE at a different spot.

EATHOUSE consists of a modular system of plain plastic crates, in combination with a scaffold structure. These crates are used in the agricultural industry to harvest, transport and exhibit fruit and vegetables in combination with a scaffold system. With this system vertical green becomes accessible for everyone; you can make your own edible garden on the wall of your balcony or on the roof of your garden shed!

Garden of 10,000 bridges 万桥园 opens at Xian Expo: West 8

WEST 8 - Garden of 10,000 bridges 万桥园 Xian

The International Horticultural Expo in Xian, China opened on 28th April. The Garden of 10,000 bridges by West 8 is complete along with many other display gardens.

Gardens are telling stories; they are poetry and have a narrative. Our garden represents the human life, the path of people’s lifetime. This path is a path of uncertainty and burden. Many bridges over troubled water. The garden design takes this path of life as a meandering, winding road – continuous and like a labyrinth. The path through nature takes you over 10000 bridges.

For the 2011 Xi’an International Horticulture Exhibition, West 8 designed a Master Landscape Architect Garden, that plays with the limits and the sensation of surprise.

The International Horticulture Exhibition 2011 has many gardens designed by world renowned landscape architects such as TerragramMartha SchwartzSLATopotek1, Catherine Mosbach, Plasma StudioGROSS.MAXEMBT Miralles/Tagliabue, and Atelier DYJG. Also a 9000 square metre garden has been designed by various landscape architecture programs from across the world that were exhibited in July this year at the Creative Nature Exhibition in Qingpu, Shanghai.  With many other gardens designed by city and provinces along with some enterprise gardens. The 2011 Xi’an International Horticulture Exhibition will be held from 28 April to 8 October 2011.
