The Tree Houses Project, designed by The Portico Group, represents a plan to provide children and their families with unique experiences at the Evans Children’s Adventure Garden within Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs, AR. The conceptual organizational approach for new encounter stations will encourage kids to “Look, Find and Discover that the Woods are Alive!”

A group of organisations, landowners and individuals have come together to create a website dedicated to the life and work of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown as the first step towards marking the 300th anniversary of his birth in 2016. The Capability Brown 300 Celebration and Festival websiteis being created by Kolab and will be completed in three phases. Once completed it will be the first website to commemorate Brown’s work and legacy, provide an extensive directory of the many landscapes he created and host a portal of forthcoming events and activities taking place in the Birthday year.

Our rapidly urbanizing world is faced with a very real challenge — supporting a larger population with fewer resources. The UN reports that by 2050, the global population will swell to 9.1 billion — with 6.3 billion people predicted to live in urban areas. This unprecedented urban growth requires a novel approach to alleviate food scarcity, and a shift in preconceptions about what the urban fabric can offer. The re-imagining of cities as a bastion for urban agriculture has spurred a number of provocative designs. While many of the schemes succeed in bringing food production closer to where it’s consumed, they are still too energy inefficient to serve as viable models. The landscape architectural design competition for the IGA Berlin 2017 has been won by geskes.hack Landschaftsarchitekten and VIC Brücken und Ingenieurbau designing one of the largest open space projects in Berlin. The landscape design is for a unique new park landscape is to be built over an area of more than 100 hectares. Beginning with the Gardens of the World, the park landscape will reach out to Kienberg hill and parts of the expansive Wuhletal valley. The purpose of this competition, which IGA Berlin 2017 GmbH staged on behalf of the federal state of Berlin, was to find ideas that could translate the framework concept of IGA into an attractive spatial setting.

Systems theory has been an important method of thought in order to design landscapes in a sustainable manner. In our world today, humans are the leading influence on all systems; therefore, human impact is an integral part in how a sustainable system is conceived. Systems design is larger than the physical realm; it is the design of how our society acts, which reinforces how we think. As landscape architects, we have the opportunity to design new human activities within the landscape that become habit, a part of culture, and influence systems.
