Design Council calls for new strategy for good design in the built environment

Design Council has called for a new cross-government strategy and a commitment from all political parties to deliver and inspire public demand for high quality design in the built environment. Through the experience of its Cabe team and in consultation with its network of Built Environment Experts the Design Council has identified the following key recommendations to the Farrell Review of Architecture and the Built Environment to put to government:

J.B. Jackson, in his book Discovering the Vernacular Landscape, wrote “No group sets out to create a landscape of course.  What it sets out to do is to create a community, and the landscape as its visible manifestation is simply the by-product of people working and living, sometimes coming together, sometimes staying apart, but always recognizing their interdependence.” This spirit of community and collaboration couldn’t be more evident than in Stamford, Connecticut during the city’s recent opening celebration of Mill River Park. Residents gathered for a weekend of festivities along the banks of Mill River, commemorating the long anticipated 14-acre park designed by OLIN.

Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Service Wall | Seymour Australia | Sinatra Murphy & AQL Landscape Design

A Collaboration between Melbourne practices Sinatra Murphy Pty Ltd and AQL Landscape Design transformed the design of the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Service Wall from a traditional black granite wall with 60,000 gold gilded etched names, to a meaningful visual story that invites an audience beyond those who served. The 85 metre wall is composed of 108 glass art panels that describe Australia’s involvement in the war from 1962 to 1973.

Wawa Pukllay | Coporaque Perú | Coporaque Workshop & AGA estudio creativo

Wawa Pukllay, which means children playing on Quechua, was the invitation of  the Social Latin American Workshop 2013 consisting on taking advantage of  specific places from different locations at the Colca Valley, to the creation  of conditions that would enable the empowerment by a special user: children. During a two week-period on April 2013, Latin American students gathered in working groups, with tutors from different nationalities, to develop and  build permanent equipment.
