Stormwater is important part of any landscape and even more so in cities.  Cities are striving to understand water and stormwater management and implement water sustainable design principles. This 5 minute video recently posted on vimeo by DBA Inc. gives graphic information about a New Orleans water management study that was undertaken by a group of Architects, Landscape Architects, Engineers, and Planners.

HUD launches Rebuild by Design competition to promote resilience for Sandy-affected regions

U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently launched REBUILD BY DESIGN, a multi-stage regional design competition. The goal of the competition is to attract world-class talent, promote innovation and develop projects that will actually be built. Once the best ideas are identified, HUD will incentivize their implementation using funds made available through the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program as well as other public and private funds. Examples of design solutions are expected to range in scope and scale – from large-scale green infrastructure to small-scale residential resiliency retrofits.

The site of Eptapirgio has a special identity and atmosphere, abundant natural beauty and astonishing views. The site itself forms the inspiration for the project, its genius loci is wished to be maintained. Monument, landscape and memory are strongly attached to this place. The intervention has a strong ecological –bioclimatic aspect and uses few elements to organize the place. The concept derives from the defensive character of the walls. It is seen as a new layer of filtering from the urban tissue to the interior enclosed historical landscape that is the protagonist.

‘The Meeting Room’ | Maya Lin | Newport USA


The Doris Duke Monument Foundation (DDMF), an offshoot of the Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF), has delivered an installation at Queen Anne Square in Newport, RI, with a dual purpose. It was created to honor the memory of Doris Duke, who championed Newport’s historic preservation and left an enduring legacy of historic architecture; and created to honor the effect of historic preservation as a catalyst for community revitalization.

The installation, entitled ‘The Meeting Room’, was created by Maya Lin, an artist selected for her thoughtfulness in approaching the site, its historic context, the visitor, and the important contributions made to Newport by Doris Duke. The landscaping was designed by Edwina von Gal, a talented landscape architect whom Maya Lin personally selected for this project.
