A group of researchers from Virginia Tech, Cornell, and University of California at Davis have been investigating innovative ways to maximize the potential of trees to address stormwater.

Virginia Tech scientists used two container experiments to establish that urban tree roots have the potential to penetrate compacted subsoils and increase infiltration rates in reservoirs being used to store stormwater.”

UNEP, Qatar to introduce environment-friendly, paperless conferences

Paper-free or paperless conferences may soon be in vogue if a pioneering initiative by the Nairobi-based United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Qatar passes the test of time.

The initiative is being tried by delegates attending an international conference on the protection of the ozone layer.

Victoria leads Canada in green transport – Canada.com

canada.com reports that “Victoria has once again beat out cities many times its size and been ranked the greenest city to get around in Canada.

The B.C. city of 330,000 is followed by Vancouver, Ottawa-Gatineau, Montreal and Toronto on the second annual national ranking of environmentally friendly transportation.”

Green roofs initiative being applied to Municipal Buildings

Dubai Municipality has embarked on an initiative called “Green Roofs” during the Green Dubai Forum, which was held recently. The concept will be applied on the roofs of the Municipality buildings to gauge its positive impacts on them. Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality said the Municipality has launched the initiative in line with the law on the application of green building specifications in Dubai, which will be officially issued in mid-December under the directives of the UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
