Earlier this year it is announced at the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens that the OKRA team of OKRA in collaboration with Mixst urbanism and Wageningen University, had won the prestigious competition ReThink Athens, towards a new city centre. The team is supported by the Greek Architects of Studio 75 and Werner Sobek Green Technologies. The event took place in presence of the President of the Onassis Foundation, Mr. Anthony Papadimitriou, the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Antonis Samaras, the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Georgios Kaminis, and many high officials.

Our rapidly urbanizing world is faced with a very real challenge — supporting a larger population with fewer resources. The UN reports that by 2050, the global population will swell to 9.1 billion — with 6.3 billion people predicted to live in urban areas. This unprecedented urban growth requires a novel approach to alleviate food scarcity, and a shift in preconceptions about what the urban fabric can offer. The re-imagining of cities as a bastion for urban agriculture has spurred a number of provocative designs. While many of the schemes succeed in bringing food production closer to where it’s consumed, they are still too energy inefficient to serve as viable models. The team involved in designing the Chicago Lakeside Development is utilizing computational modeling for the massive 600-acre, urban development planned for the South Side of Chicago, along Lake Michigan.

LakeSim is a collaboration between University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, the Computation Institute, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and McCaffery to develop a prototype computational framework for Chicago Lakeside development. Planning for Chicago Lakeside will necessitate augmenting traditional tools with data and scientific computation, allowing developers to model the complex interplay between energy, waste and water infrastructures.

Located in Shenzhen, China, OCT Bay has a combined site area of approximately 1.25 square kilometers including a new urban center and nature preserve. The design of the master plan and landscape architecture is targeted towards creating public open space for the city that balances development and ecology.

Stormwater is important part of any landscape and even more so in cities. Cities are striving to understand water and stormwater management and implement water sustainable design principles. TechTown—an emerging knowledge district in Midtown Detroit—is currently characterized by surface parking, vacant properties, and inward-facing, siloed hubs of activity. The TechTown District Plan articulates an inspiring vision for the revitalization of the district. The plan accelerates innovation, promotes entrepreneurship, and builds community around the generation of ideas in a vibrant, mixed-use setting. Leveraging the potential of key institutional anchors within the district (Wayne State University, College for Creative Studies, and Henry Ford Health System), the plan creates an environment that fosters knowledge generation and innovation. The plan repurposes the historic building stock with uses that support innovation and create vibrancy, and also strengthens connections within Midtown Detroit and to surrounding neighborhoods.

Henning Larsen Architects has been selected to design the European Spallation Source research centre. In a large international design contest, two winners were chosen: the concept by the Henning Larsen consortium, and the concept by the BIG/HOK consortium. In the end, HLA was selected to develop the final design.The ESS is Europe’s largest science current project. It will be the world-leading research facility for materials research and life science with neutrons.
