The Mayor of New York recently announced that the city will install the largest solar energy installation in New York City at Freshkills Parks. The installation is set to power 2,000 homes and will increase the City’s current renewable energy capacity by 50 percent. The Administration is moving forward with steps to officially map an additional 1,500 acres of Freshkills into parkland, officially bringing the total for Freshkills Park to 2,200 acres and bringing total parkland in New York City to more than 30,000 acres for the first time in history.

The revitalisation of Dandenong’s Lonsdale Street – a collaboration between landscape architecture/urban design studio TCL and BKK Architects – recently received a major national award for its outstanding urban design. The public infrastructure project took out the highest accolade for urban design – the Walter Burley Griffin Award – at the 2013 Australian National Architecture Awards, held at the Sydney Opera House.

Earlier this year it is announced at the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens that the OKRA team of OKRA in collaboration with Mixst urbanism and Wageningen University, had won the prestigious competition ReThink Athens, towards a new city centre. The team is supported by the Greek Architects of Studio 75 and Werner Sobek Green Technologies. The event took place in presence of the President of the Onassis Foundation, Mr. Anthony Papadimitriou, the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Antonis Samaras, the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Georgios Kaminis, and many high officials.

Our rapidly urbanizing world is faced with a very real challenge — supporting a larger population with fewer resources. The UN reports that by 2050, the global population will swell to 9.1 billion — with 6.3 billion people predicted to live in urban areas. This unprecedented urban growth requires a novel approach to alleviate food scarcity, and a shift in preconceptions about what the urban fabric can offer. The re-imagining of cities as a bastion for urban agriculture has spurred a number of provocative designs. While many of the schemes succeed in bringing food production closer to where it’s consumed, they are still too energy inefficient to serve as viable models. The team involved in designing the Chicago Lakeside Development is utilizing computational modeling for the massive 600-acre, urban development planned for the South Side of Chicago, along Lake Michigan.

LakeSim is a collaboration between University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, the Computation Institute, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and McCaffery to develop a prototype computational framework for Chicago Lakeside development. Planning for Chicago Lakeside will necessitate augmenting traditional tools with data and scientific computation, allowing developers to model the complex interplay between energy, waste and water infrastructures.
