The Canadian Firefighters Memorial officially opened on September 9, in Ottawa, Canada. Located at the site of the capital’s devastating fire of 1900, this urban-planning memorial ensemble was collaboratively designed by PLANT Architect Inc. and Canadian visual artist and novelist Douglas Coupland. The team won the national competition hosted by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) and the National Capital Commission (NCC) in 2010. Imagine being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. The car’s not moving, you’re channel surfing, nothing but ads or news on the radio… Nothing but billboards with advertising — digital and print — on the skyline. But wait… What’s that up ahead? A billboard that looks like a small forest of living bamboo surrounded by a cloud of mist? That will be Urban Air, coming to a Los Angeles freeway near you if artist and creator Stephen Glassman has his way.

Dongqian Lake, a water reservoir supplying the residents of Ningbo, requires regular dredging which results in a large quantity of by-product. The local authorities recognised an opportunity to use this by-product for the creation of a man-made island within the lake. The Ningbo Planning Bureau for Dongqian Lake Tourist and Holiday Resort invited a select group of consultants to provide conceptual proposals for the development of an island precinct. The HASSELL concept won the competition. A feasibility study was undertaken and the development of the proposal is now underway.

The first legacy project to be delivered after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games recently opened at Three Mills Green in Stratford.
Wild Kingdom is a unique and distinctive new play area where children can really let their imagination roam. Wild Kingdom has been designed to allow children of all ages to create their own playground from the natural surroundings. Carefully placed fallen trees, nets and ropes provide climbing frames and swings, whilst giant tree stumps, branches and hammocks provide the tools to build dens. Wild Kingdom also has more traditional play equipment including a maypole swing and trampoline but all have a natural twist.

BDP has been commissioned for the relocation of a prestigious primary and secondary school in Jumeirah, Dubai. The relocation of Jumeirah College to Al Khail Road will provide additional facilities for 2,300 students. The new building has already started on site and will be a showcase school for the charitable organisation GEMS Education.
