Dotting the global landscape, decommissioned military installations are leaving their mark – symbols of triumph, pride, pain and the unforeseen consequences of military aggression. These abandoned structures and ghost towns disrupt neighborhoods and split entire communities.

Architecture for Humanity is hosting  [un]restricted access – a design competition that will re-envision the future of decommissioned military space. This is an open invite to the global design and construction community to identify retired military installations in their own backyard, to collaborate with local stakeholders, and to reclaim these spaces for social, economic, and environmental good.

Narrabeen Multi-Use Trail | Sydney Australia | ASPECT Studios

Narrabeen Lagoon-ASPECT Studios
ASPECT Studios has completed a multi-use trail at Narrabeen Lagoon on Sydney’s northern beaches. The lagoon is one of Sydney’s natural assets and is a major drawcard and focal point of the area. Diverse experiences are on offer at different locations around the lagoon. The eastern side comes to life especially at the weekends as people take to the water in kayaks and swimming, or strolling and pausing at cafes, restaurants and the bustling Sunday market. The western side of the circuit, which ASPECT Studios have designed, offers a tranquil bush experience. The new trail provides a multi-layered recreational facility and safe shared trail for pedestrians and cyclists to enhance the existing trail and facilitate the area.

Katherine Spitz Associates

Katherine Spitz has created her home garden over the last two decades with her husband, Daniel Rhodes, an architect.  As a landscape architect and an architect, they have been experimenting with their garden, continually upgrading, rethinking and replanting each outdoor room. They have been using plant material, design, pieces of landscape history and ideas from their travels to experiment with their garden. Seeing how plants grow, change and has influenced what to she uses in her own landscape designs. The garden is a living record of changing aspirations and desires, as each new room and each new element reflects our increasing design maturity and confidence.

Hapa Collaborative from Vancouver, British Columbia, with their design “Figure Ground” have won the Market Lane Design Competition in London, Ontario. The city of London, Canada is located midway between Detroit and Toronto. With a population of more than 365,000, it is the 10th largest city in Canada and serves as a regional hub for surrounding communities.

Like many North American cities, London has had a heavy reliance on the automobile. That love affair with the car has encouraged the construction of sprawling suburbs, massive shopping malls and big box retail stores. The affect on the city’s downtown was predictable: a once vibrant core became badly in need of rejuvenation and reclamation.
