How can rural dynamics be employed to adequately cope with the global challenges that we are currently facing and how can these challenges once again turn rural areas into a system that works? The Veenkoloniën (Groningen peat district) is a rural area in the North of the Netherlands that is facing a number of major economic, social and ecological challenges. As an agricultural area, the region is part of a global system. Consequently, its challenges are not caused by internal factors, but by the global food system and this system’s impact on the area, i.e. the social, economic and ecological environment that it creates.

In 2010, as the Jurong Birdpark positioned itself as a Garden Of Paradise, the overall master plan of Jurong Birdpark was divided into five geographic zones: South East Asian, European, South American, African and Australasian zone. Each Zone has its own garden theme and exhibits with a beautiful and unique landscape, and indigenous plants respective to each region and is enhanced by charismatic sculptures to increase the visitors’ memorable experience in the park.

The Bay Lights | the Bay Bridge now a light sculpture


On March 5 “The Bay Lights”, the world’s largest LED light sculpture, 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high was lit. Inspired by the Bay Bridge’s 75th Anniversary, its 25,000 white LED lights are individually programmed by artist Leo Villareal to create a never-repeating, dazzling display across the Bay Bridge West Span through 2015. Shining from dusk until 2:00 a.m. for two years, it will impact over 50 million people in the Bay Area.

HASSELL to design high street public realm proposals for Croydon Council


HASSELL, in collaboration with We Made That, has been appointed by London Borough of Croydon to deliver an important public realm project as part of the Connected Croydon programme. Supported by Engineers Buro Happold and graphic designers, Objectif, the team will deliver the South End Public Realm, part of a coordinated set of projects to enhance Croydon’s high streets.

The £2.8m South End scheme will transform the streetscape of a key gateway into central Croydon – and the heart of the Borough’s restaurant district – to create a coherent, high
quality and welcoming place. Works are expected to start on site in early 2014 following extensive engagement and consultation with stakeholders and community groups.
