Cemeteries in North America almost exclusively all follow the same model – the Garden Cemetery of 1831 Mount Auburn, based on a concept of vast naturalized space. It is no longer 1831 and local and world issues have shifted along with our values and our cultural community. The traditional design has served its purpose in most major cities on the continent. It is pervasive and it is time to consider its effects and consequences on the city. Our modern communities are faced with new challenges unforeseen 200 years ago, such as increased multiculturalism, densification of urban cores rather than expansion of suburbs, environmental challenges, and a shift towards a more economically polarized society.

A unique landscape responding to an innovative new residential building set within rural Northumberland. The brief was to develop a sustainable dwelling that sat within, and responded to, its surroundings. Architects Mawson Kerr proposed a pioneering barn conversion that uses innovative construction techniques and sustainable technologies alongside local materials to produce a simple, elegant new home.

Mandaworks & Hosper win International Urban Design Competition in Trenčín Slovakia

Mandaworks and Hosper Sweden have been awarded first prize in the open international urban design competition in Trenčín, Slovakia. On May 19th, 2014 the results were announced. Mandaworks and Hosper were selected from 59 entrants to receive first prize and awarded € 30,000. The competition was organized by the City of Trenčín with support from the Swiss-Slovak Cooperation Programme and financed by contributions from the Swiss Confederation and co-financed from the state budget of the Slovak Republic.

Wen Yu Kee wins 2013 HASSELL Travelling Scholarship

Wen Yu Kee from the University of New South Wales is the winner of the 2013 HASSELL Travelling Scholarship – Robin Edmond Award. The annual award recognises landscape architecture students studying in Australia who show outstanding potential for future contribution to the profession. It provides the winner with the opportunity to expand their education by travelling abroad and immersing themselves in a destination of their choice that is undergoing significant urban development or renewal.

Elli Nikolaidou’s thesis develops a redesign of the Customs Office area in Kavala, with a principal goal to reconnect with the city. The regeneration of the space will allow its conversion to an important part of the life and the motion of the city center. Thanks to the creation of a network of pathways and spots of interest for pedestrians, the development of the natural element and the reuse of buildings, the area will be active all day long.
