The long road to a new square | Cologne | metrobox architekten

The basic design concept was created by overlaying the images associated with the square, its use and its location. People flow through the built-up urban landscape, each like a water droplet in a river. The skaters have made this flow of people into a game. Quiet, long drawn-out stretches with large radiuses alternate with jumping at obstacles, like the flowing and spraying of water in a river. The location of the square on the Rhine places this image in an appropriate scenic context.

The implementation of this concept in reality is achieved by overlaying the area with a virtual grid which has uniform building areas at the cross-over points. The grid and building areas represent urban elements and are taken from the urban environment. However, to turn this stark grouping on a grid into a spontaneous arrangement that is optimal for this sport, the area had to be reorganised using a particular algorithm. This turned the building areas into structures of different sizes; they rise out of the landscape or sink into it to intersperse the space with green elements, meadows and trees. The basic structures are skate objects made from concrete and stand like stones covered by water in a river of flagstones. The ground combines with the skate objects using a template.

The road under the Second Street Bridge has been transformed into a plaza — filled with plantings, seats and pedestrian spaces to host festivals and celebrations — shaded by the dynamically illuminated overpass. Leni Schwendinger Light Projects’ streetscape scope included a service road and vacant land alongside the Clark Memorial Bridge. The historic cantilevered truss bridge, locally known as Second Street Bridge, crosses the Ohio River. Conveniently located adjacent to the new Yum Arena, the objective was to transform the off-ramp into a vibrant promenade.

8 HOUSE is located in Southern Ørestad on the edge of the Copenhagen Canal and with a view of the open spaces of Kalvebod Fælled. It is a big house in the literal sense of the word. A house offering homes in all its bearings for people in all of life’s stages: the young and the old, nuclear families and singles, families that grow and families that become smaller.

At the very same spot, the building is penetrated by a 9 meter wide passage that connects the two surrounding city spaces: the park area to the west and the channel area to the east. Instead of dividing the different functions of the building – for both habitation and trades – into separate blocks, the various functions have been spread out horizontally. The apartments are placed at the top while the commercial program unfolds at the base of the building. As a result, the different horizontal layers have achieved a quality of their own: the apartments benefit from the view, sunlight and fresh air, while the office leases merge with life on the street.

OLIN has rejuvenated the garden landscape surrounding the Rodin Museum located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.
