WINNER | Transient Transit – Revitalizing Industrial Infrastructure
Part of the Van Alen Spring Festival, Disruption?, the L Train Shutdown Charrette invited teams to “disrupt” the complex process of public transportation improvement. The one-day charrette offered an opportunity for fresh thinking, allowing for interdisciplinary teams to imagine systemic design solutions for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers during an extended period of reduced subway service.

The Daiichi project site is located 40 miles outside of Tokyo in a small, quiet town surrounded by rice fields, coastlines, and mountains. The company aimed to improve working conditions for their employees and to make manifest the company’s commitment to a healthy environment. In order to fulfill their building design concept, “Working in a Forest,” Takenaka Architecture invited WRT to serve as landscape design consultants.

In the 1950s, 60s and 70s almost all Amsterdam city parks, including Oosterpark, have had playful additions designed by the famous Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck. Employed by the Municipality of Amsterdam, Van Eyck designed more than 700 public play zones between 1947 and 1978. They illustrate his vision on the use of a city, in which play zones become a present architectonically interesting urban element, that brings together young and old. Especially Van Eyck’s paddling pools function as true magnets for children during summertime, and his climbing igloos have become an intrinsic part of the youth of Amsterdam city kids generations.

The City of Los Angeles selects the team lead by Mia Lehrer + Associates (MLA) to design a new public park at First and Broadway for the City’s Department of Recreation and Parks, and soon to be one of the most important civic spaces in the city’s vibrant downtown core. Led by Los Angeles based landscape architects MLA, the design team includes OMA as design architect, and innovation firm IDEO. The overall project management will be performed by the City’s Bureau of Engineering.
