The upgrades to Little Hay Street, Factory Street and Kimber Lane are stage one in the transformation of Chinatown’s Public Domain. The focus of the work is to uplift the public domain quality and strengthen the pedestrian connections, whilst improving lighting, furniture, and embracing the distinguishing character of each street or laneway by integrating site specific public artworks.

2012 LAGI competition winners announced

The organisers of LAGI,  an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork at Freshkills Park have announced the winners of the  2012 LAGI design competition. The winner is Scene-Sensor // Crossing Social and Ecological Flows – a series of Piezoelectric Generators (Thin Film and Embedded Wire) that can generate upto 5,500 MWh designed by James Murray and Shota Vashakmadze from Atlanta, USA.

Rich human and environmental heritages in constant change, and the project program, suggest the intention of man to explore other resources that the landscape offers. Recreation and leisure, observation of wildlife and flora, water cycles and agricultural activities that are taking place in this landscape, are the explicit objectives of the project. The conservation of natural and cultural values and the dynamic equilibrium of this habitat protected from disturbances that the implementation of the program could bring, is the implicit and essential goal.

Seeds of Change | Bristol UK | Gitta Gschwendtner & Maria Thereza Alves

‘Seeds of Change’ is a floating garden; the result of a collaboration between the designer Gitta Gschwendtner and the artist Maria Thereza Alves. The title ‘Seeds of Change’ stems from an ongoing ballast seed garden project from Brazillian artist Maria Thereza Alves. Between 1680 and the early 1900’s ships’ ballast – earth, stones and gravel from trade boats from all over the world used to weigh down the vessel as it docked- was offloaded into the river at Bristol. This ballast contained the seeds of plants from wherever the ship had sailed.

As part of Beijing Design Week the “Hutopolis: city visions” is an exhibition that collects one year of research, experiments and events organized in Asia and Europe by the Hutopolis research program with the goal of creating feasible solutions for urban planning in China.

Soft and physical strategies, visions and ideas have been developed taking Beijing as case study Conceived as a collaborative network featuring a series of proposals from different backgrounds, the exhibition showcases strategies based on four sites in both historical and modern areas of the city.
