BDP’s public realm scheme for Carlos Place and Mount Street in Mayfair, London was completed back in July. The project for Grosvenor is one of a number of schemes that seek to enhance the public realm of its central London estate.

BDP has upgraded the streetscape in terms of composition, surfacing materials and furniture elements. The grandeur of this area has been revived through improvements to the pedestrian experience, the removal of clutter and the putting in place of high quality surfacing materials, by strengthening the street’s relationship to its buildings and by making Carlos Place and Mount Street Gardens better places for people.

The Atlanta BeltLine is an infrastructure framework around which the urban core of Atlanta will grow by as many as 100,000 people. This loop of old railroads is being transformed into a 22-mile transit greenway that combines light-rail transit, parks and multi-use trails to generate economic growth and protect quality-of-life in 45 historic neighborhoods surrounding the central city. The BeltLine Corridor Design will establish typologies for all landscape architecture elements, wayfinding and signage, infrastructure and development interface. With a phased implementation plan, some components are being implemented even as design work is ongoing.

Freiham Nord | Munich Germany | WEST 8

Frieham Nord-West8
West 8 won the Freiham Nord Urban Design Competition back in September. Freiham Nord will be the last substantial development to take place in Munich and will accommodate about 10.000 inhabitants. In the Masterplan Freiham Nord has been divided into several project areas with different programming, each about 40 ha in size. The city of Munich organized a design competition for the first two project areas in which 24 offices participated.

West 8’s winning entry is about a friendly green neighbourhood. Our design allows the creation of a city for all generations intending to mix ages and achieve a diverse melange of inhabitants.

14th Street Initiative Urban Design Guidelines | Denver Colorado | studioINSITE

©studioINSITE

studioINSITE was commissioned to develop a design vision for 14th Street redevelopment in Downtown Denver – a process which began with the 14th Street Initiative. Hired to establish a set of design guidelines to direct the future of 14th Street redevelopment, the project spans 12 linear city blocks between Market Street and Colfax Avenue in downtown Denver. In consideration of adjacent programming, including numerous hotels, the Colorado Convention Center, The Denver Performing Arts Complex, restaurants and a variety other resources for tourism and arts in Denver, the goal was to establish 14th street as a “cultural spine”, adding new streetscape amenities, accommodating existing light-rail and future bicycle traffic, and contributing to the overall improvement of downtown Denver’s physical environment. As a follow-up to the Initiative, studioINSITE  led a Feasibility Study to compare initiative ideas with actual survey information. The resulting information was used to determine the feasibility of the larger conceptual plan to expand sidewalks and curbs on the north side.

INTERVENTION
The present state of the selected sites includes dominant traffic infrastructure (vast parking lots) and the railroad as a barrier. There is no public space and sparse green can be found. The problems that rise from here are: non-attractiveness of the space, decreased feeling of safety, and environmental problems, such as non-permeable soil and disturbed microclimate. Intervention in these areas encompasses reorganization of parking lots (moving underground), which leaves the ground free for people and for public spaces. This space is used for establishing green structures that improve the environmental condition, and provide people with necessary contact with nature and room for socialization. The areas of intervention are mainly large centers with a high number of commuters.
