Architects warn anew of topsy-turvy urban planning among cities

“An association of architects has warned anew of the lack of a master plan in the design of cities, pointing to the common urban blight of traffic, drainage and sanitation.

Francis Hidalgo, vice president for operation of the Davao Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) said, “it’s very difficult to have a topsy-turvy construction that is not tied to a master plan.”

He said this was the mistake of Metro Manila “and even Davao City may be repeating the mistakes of Metro Manila.” “

Tsang: HK to upgrade living environment through sustainable development – Xinhua

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Donald Tsang said Wednesday the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will press ahead with sustainable development, in order to upgrade the quality living environment for residents in this “modern world city”.

When delivering the 2008-09 Policy Address at the Legislative Council Wednesday, Tsang said the local government achieved substantial progress in striking a balance between economic development and environmental conservation last year.

Government Minister calls for improvement in planning and design of Britain’s towns and cities

Government Minister Iain Wright MP today called for an improvement in the planning and design of Britain’s towns and cites and stressed the importance of good quality public space.

The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Communities and Local Government said good design influenced people’s opportunities and aspirations but that it currently remained “an exception rather than the norm.”

Speaking at the Landscape Institute Conference on the theme of “Housing, Land Use and Community,” Wright said: “Building more houses is only part of what we want to achieve. Bad design has a profound impact on the whole community. We are talking about people’s lives, people’s opportunities, helping to shape people’s ambitions and aspirations.
