New Ecotown Will Ruin The Area Warns Parish Council

PROPOSALS to build a new eco-town on an old airfield could spell the end of surrounding market towns and villages in south Worcestershire, a parish council has warned.

Bishampton and Throckmorton Parish Council said it thought the idea to build between 5,000 and 20,000 environmentally friendly’ new homes on the disused former RAF base at Throckmorton “wholly inappropriate” for the area.

Public Sculpture by Conceptual Artist Dennis Oppenheim

Philadelphia has a new sound. Home to the Declaration of Independence and the famous Liberty Bell, the city now hosts an installation of bell-like public sculpture by conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim. Wave Forms is spectacular, featuring six, 20 foot, bell shapes made of aluminum tube and perforated aluminum, in open-air courtyards adjacent to a new apartment complex at the University of Pennsylvania.

Oppenheim refined his proposal in consultation with the landscape architect Sara Peschel. The work was engineered, transported and installed by La Paloma Fine Art of Sun Valley, California.

Ho Chi Minh City University to open Urban Faculty

The Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Science and Humanities is about to open an Urban Faculty to meet increasing demand for urban management. Professor Dr Vo Van Sen, a deputy to HCM City People’s Council and Rector of the university, spoke to Thoi bao Kinh te Sai Gon (Sai Gon Economic Times).

CABE Champions Design Competitions in New Exhibition

A CABE exhibition opening at New London Architecture in London on 17 January 2008 will show what design competitions can achieve – and that they are one of the best ways to procure well-designed buildings and places.

Competitions Work will feature the winning projects and runners-up for the three UK sites for Europan 9, Europe’s leading housing and urban design competition for young professionals. The sites in Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent are actual developments and the winners will be announced on 16 January 2008.
