The city celebrated the start of construction of its Pier C Park yesterday with a symbolic groundbreaking near the Hudson River’s edge.
The kidney-shaped, 2-acre park is anchored to land by a narrow pier on one end and a meandering path on the other.
“It will offer the chance for a different relationship with the water than what you normally have,” said landscape architect Mark Pattin, of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the firm designing the park. “It’s an amazing opportunity to build a pier from scratch.”

Perth’s vast potential is being strangled by over-reliance on cars and poor use of public space resulting in bland, soulless suburbs, according to Australian Institute of Landscape Architects new WA president Greg Grabasch.
Mr Grabasch said Perth, with its abundance of natural beauty, had the potential to be a world-class city but years of leaving landscape and streetscape design to planners who had not been trained in creating effective public spaces was killing the city’s character.

A team of five design companies was chosen today to design the transformation of Governors Island from an abandoned military base into a 90-acre open space at the heart of New York Harbor. The new parkland will include a two-mile promenade on the water’s edge, a 40-acre park occupying the southern half of the island and improvements in the historic military district that makes up the northern half of the island and includes structures built as early as 1810.
The winning design team comprises five companies: West 8; Rogers Marvel Architects; Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the architects designing the High Line in Chelsea; Quennell Rothschild and Partners and SMWM.
