Leslie Giles was frustrated with the beachside sprawl while Luke and Susan Wilburding were bored living in quiet suburbia in the Venetian Bay neighborhood of New Smyrna Beach.
So, they recently did what Americans used to do and moved downtown. They are part of a growing national movement of increased interest in urban living, driven mainly by rising gas prices.
“This is a slice of that urban area. It’s more home for us. The restaurants, the Cubs and night life,” said Luke Wilburding. The 30-something couple, originally from Chicago, put their 4-year-old Venetian Bay home up for rent in January and moved into a rented unit at the 2-year-old Wall Street Lofts at Magnolia Avenue and Wall Street, half a block off Beach Street and within sight of Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Macau’s urban planning should not only focus on gaming as it solely will not contribute a healthy and sustainable development in the region, said mainland experts at a conference in Macau yesterday.
The Research Centre for Sustainable Development Strategies organised the third expert conference yesterday at Wynn Macau where professional bodies and individuals from the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau were invited to discuss the “Macau Urban Planning Conceptual Framework”.

China on Thursday passed a report on the relief work and reconstruction following the May 12 quake that devastated the southwest Sichuan and some neighboring provinces.
The country will spend three years to complete preliminary reconstruction and further develop the quake-hit region in the following five years, according to the plan.
Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Wednesday 40 billion yuan (about 5.7 billion U.S. dollars) from the reconstruction fund would be dedicated to subsidize the rebuilding and repair of farmers’ homes.
