J.B. Jackson, in his book Discovering the Vernacular Landscape, wrote “No group sets out to create a landscape of course. What it sets out to do is to create a community, and the landscape as its visible manifestation is simply the by-product of people working and living, sometimes coming together, sometimes staying apart, but always recognizing their interdependence.” This spirit of community and collaboration couldn’t be more evident than in Stamford, Connecticut during the city’s recent opening celebration of Mill River Park. Residents gathered for a weekend of festivities along the banks of Mill River, commemorating the long anticipated 14-acre park designed by OLIN.

A new piazza in the heart of Milan named after Gae Aulenti, the late Italian architect of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and sits at the heart of the Porta Nuova Garibaldi development adjacent to Milan’s main train station. AECOM, winning the project as EDAW, architect César Pelli and Italian landscape designers Land have together provided a stunning new gateway to one of Europe’s most stylish cities. Linked to Milan’s main public transport hub (Garibaldi Railway station), the square is a key part of one of Italy’s largest regeneration projects.

At almost 20 sq km the Seven Lochs Wetland Park will be Scotlandʼs largest urban nature park, and a major new destination for outdoor recreation. The Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) in association with Glasgow and Clyde Valley Green Network Partnership (GCVGNP) and Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN) are pleased to invite entries from design professionals and students to produce concept design proposals to connect two key sites within the Seven Lochs Wetland Park, a major new destination for outdoor recreation expected to attract over one million visitors per year.

LAGI ideas competition will be held in Copenhagen for 2014. Previously LAGI was held in New York in 2012 and UAE in 2010, with the recent announcement by The Land Art Generator Initiative and Refshaleøen Holding that the LAGI 2014 ideas competition will be held in Copenhagen in partnership with IT University of Copenhagen, Refshaleøen Holding, Albertslund Municipality, Danish Architecture Centre, Information Studies at Aarhus University, and Alexandra Institute. The design guidelines will launched January, 2014.

Plans have been announced for a mega integrated healthcare hub, to be built around Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore, designed by Broadway Malyan. ‘Health City Novena’ is spearheaded by Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the National Healthcare Group and Singapore Health Ministry, and will serve patients in Central Singapore, where the local population is aging faster than the rest of the country. Community-focused design philosophy will deliver a highly-sustainable complex with a large, central open space featuring a new plaza, aimed at putting the community at the heart of the inter-connected buildings.
