On the 8th January, Mr Paul Chan, Secretary for Development for Hong Kong, announced that out of 90 entries, the competition attracted more than 90 entries from Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas. The Jury Panel of the Competition found that most of the entries could accommodate both the overall setting of the river and the peripheral development while the winning entries made use of simple and innovative design ideas to optimise space for public activities. Morphis won the international design competition for Kai Tak River with their The ‘Living Roots’ design concept.

This utilizes a natural water circulation system such as those found in natural forests and underground water systems that extend horizontally from mountain to river areas.

As a coastal city shaped by climate change, the “One Shantou: Now, Tomorrow and the Future” vision will guide the city of Shantou (located east of Hong Kong and southwest of Shanghai) through an unpredictable future. The scheme respects the extensive planning and land reclamation that had already been completed by local and regional authorities. In so doing, it avoids the common pitfall of design competitions that overlook local insight and previous investments. It also challenges the notion that competitive advantage requires a city to develop its prime real estate along coastal waterfronts.

Blue Pier | W Architecture and Landscape Architecture
Back in October, WLA reported that 8 teams were shortlisted to provide a concept design for the St.Petersburg Pier. These teams submitted their designs to the city on December 15. Each team received a $30,000 stipend to submit initial design concepts, complete with reports, renderings, cost estimates and a description of how the programmatic elements meet the findings of the Pier Working Group.

Tai O is an old fishing village rich in heritage, and once home of salt industries. It is now developed as a rural fishing village, a popular tourist attraction with traditional residential and commercial streets. Tai O lies on a low lying coastal area on the western side of Lantau Island, the major priority was to resolve the flooding problems occasionally experienced in Tai O. The improvement works of Tai O (phase 1) aimed to preserve cultural heritage and natural attributes of Tai O, which included the construction of Riverwall at Yat Chung, upgrading the temple garden in front of Kwan Tai Temple and improvement works to the signage within the inner-core area.

Harvard GSD recently posted a lecture by Christophe Girot titled “Topology: On Sensing and Conceiving Landscape”. An lecture that will intrigue students and professionals interested in Visualisation and Computer Modelling. Girot shows various projects, processes and the tools (Terrestial Laser Scanners, Point Cloud, Rhino, GIS, etc) used to create models of existing and proposed landscapes around the world.
The invention of landscape has always oscillated between a history of beliefs in nature, with its many representations, and a history of terrain measurements through various techniques of appropriation. In his talk, Christophe Girot will consider the longstanding balance between culture and its instruments for sensing and conceiving a landscape, noting that the particular representation of landscape that we hold true today has roots in the dialogue between ars and techne that has characterized every epoch. The aim of this talk and discussion is to open a window on topology’s shifting point of view with regard to this form of interdependence that will considerably affect our ability to act and perform effectively on landscape’s reality.
