Dallas CityDesign has announced the results of the Connected City Design Challenge. Stoss + SHoP‘s proposal, Hyper Density Hyper Landscape, has been uniquely recognized as the preferred proposal among the Professional Stream that included finalists Ricardo Bofill and OMA+AMO. A clear and pragmatic approach offers innovative solutions to Dallas’s urban challenges and sets the stage for transformation that will reunite Downtown Dallas and the Trinity River.

Architectural Competition – Concours d’Architecture [AC-CA] have announced a single stage cometition to design a Champagne Bar along the Paris river “Seine” and by the romantic “Pont des Arts”.
The competition hopes to achieve the following:
_Encourage and reward design excellence at a medium scale which integrates function, structure and details.
_Research and investigate the various combination possibilities to create a social space within the city.
_To generate the discussion of ideas regarding the relation between architecture and water.
_Encourage the employment of sustainable design in all aspects of the proposal.

Midtown Detroit, Inc. (MDI) in partnership with the New Economy Initiative (NEI) is seeking proposals to transform the undersides of two viaducts located in Midtown Detroit’s TechTown district with public art and light. MDI is pleased to announce that its Call for Entries is now open. However, there is one proviso – the call is open to all professional artists, architects, designers, design firms and/or teams consisting of these entities located in the following eight southeast Michigan counties: Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne.
Accepted proposals will be funded up to $75,000 per viaduct. Applicants may provide proposals for either one or both viaducts. If applying for both viaducts, proposals may treat each viaduct as two separate installations or visually connect the two viaducts with a cohesive design.

FIRST PRIZE | The Queensway Steps | Carrie Wilbert of Paris, France
The Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) committee of the AIA New York Chapter is pleased to announce the winners of its 2014 biennial design ideas competition, QueensWay Connection: Elevating the Public Realm. Entrants were challenged to design a vertical gateway for the elevated viaduct portion of a 3.5 mile stretch of abandoned railway in Central Queens, currently under study for conversion into an urban greenway by The Trust for Public Land, Friends of the Queensway, and their design consultants. Of the 120 submitted proposals from 28 countries, the jury selected the winners to represent the diverse array of ideas generated.

The Broad, Los Angeles’s newest contemporary art museum, recently unveiled designs for a new outdoor public plaza by architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Hood Design, landscaping that will feature 100-year-old olive trees as well as enhanced landscaping and improvements along Grand Avenue, adding another parcel of critical green space to the region and making downtown’s cultural corridor more pedestrian-friendly when the plaza opens later this year. In addition to the plaza next to the museum, The Broad also announced that its adjacent restaurant will be developed by leading Los Angeles restaurateur Bill Chait, with a unique vision to integrate dining with art and community.

The city has a long and continuing history of private investment in development; yet little of this growth by developers or the city investment resulted in public spaces in the downtown.

reSITE conference will be held in Prague, Czech Republic on June 19-20. reSITE is heading into its third year and quickly becoming one of the premier architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture events. reSITE 2014 will include presentations, panels and debates with over 50 leading experts from Europe, Asia and North America, while hundreds of conference delegates from dozens of countries will enrich the dialogue and experience of answering questions and forming new ones.
reSITE conference takes aim at the question of modernizing and improving the metropolis. The conference will focus on providing solutions for the conflicted desires of Central European citizens; to grow and yet weave in a complex past.
