University of Leicester stakes £1 billion to secure elite status

The University of Leicester — recently crowned University of the Year — has launched a £1 billion campus development to help it move into the top ten of British universities.

The building programme, one of the biggest ever undertaken in the sector, will strengthen Leicester’s unique position as an elite university committed to widening access to higher education.

Kimbell Art Museum reveals $70 million Renzo Piano expansion designs – Fort Worth Business Press

“After a year and half of discussion and planning, Fort Worth’s Kimbell Art Museum on Nov. 18 unveiled preliminary plans for a new $70 million neighboring building designed by Italian architectural giant Renzo Piano and funded by the Kimbell Art Foundation.

Piano said only about 20 percent of the existing lawn will be incorporated into a sweeping berm that will shield the roof from the western sun and insulate the walls. Piano said he is working closely with landscape architect Pond & Co. of Atlanta.”

Foster + Partners selected for excellence in construction in the Gulf region

Foster + Partners has been honoured with the title, “Architect of the Year”, in the inaugural Gulf State Building Awards, announced on 13 November at a ceremony in Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai.

Celebrating the highest standards in the region’s construction industry, entries were invited from companies working in the six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The judges noted that Foster + Partners’ new office in Abu Dhabi “has a variety of exciting projects already coming out of the ground – the Index Tower in Dubai will be completed next year…and the Al Raha Beach and the Central Markets projects are already bringing architecture of star quality to Abu Dhabi… Perhaps the practice’s greatest achievement has been the concept for Masdar, which has been designed as the most environmentally-friendly development in the UAE.”

Students design out terror threat

BBC News reports that “Architecture and urban planning students in Bristol are being trained in how to reduce the impact of terrorism in the buildings they design.

Students will take part in a session involving a simulated terrorist attack in a busy city centre environment.”
