The Atkins designed Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC) made history last week as the turbines on this pioneering project turned together for the first time.
The three 29m-diameter turbine blades on Bahrain’s iconic landmark are the first in the world to be integrated on such a scale into a commercial development and are forecast to provide the equivalent of 11-15% of the power for the two towers when fully operational.
The successful rotation of the blades involved collaboration between Atkins architects and engineers and turbine specialists Norwin, who were in Bahrain for the milestone event.
“Having all three turbines spinning simultaneously represents an historic achievement for this landmark project and Atkins is excited to have been a major player in turning the original idea into reality” says Simha LytheRao Senior Project Manager for Atkins in Bahrain.

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and EPA Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg announced the opening of the third New York City Green Building Competition. This national competition seeks projects and ideas that promote the New York City as the pre-eminent cultural and sustainable urban epicenter. Design projects are encouraged that integrate whole-building principles, employ the tenets of green building construction and end-of-life considerations, anticipate post-occupancy concerns, and complement the community in which they reside.
“Green building is now in the mainstream here with visionary and innovative construction projects gaining a full head of steam all over the city,” Regional Administrator Steinberg said. “This competition helps create more visible examples of building green in the mosaic of everyday city life.”
“Promoting energy efficiency and environmentally friendly design in both old and new buildings is critical to our future, and the core of PlaNYC, our long-term plan for a sustainable New York” said Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York “I am happy to announce once again that New York City will be holding a green building contest to highlight those who to create a greener future for New York through smart and innovative design.”

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) today revealed the design for the Bryghusgrunden Project at the historic waterfront in Copenhagen. The 27,000 square meter building will include new facilities for the Danish Architecture Center (DAC), the headquarters of the Realdania Foundation, along with a distinctive mix of residential units, public program and playground facilities.
The Bryghusgrunden Project is located on the harbor on the site of an old brewery, the Bryghusgrunden, one of the few remaining areas with the potential to link the city to the waterfront. The building itself will straddle the busy Christians Brygge ring road, creating new urban connections for pedestrians and cyclists between the waterfront and Denmark’s houses of government.
The mix of program within the building is unique – for the first time an architecture center will be embedded within its own key subjects of study and research – housing, offices, public space and parking. The DAC will include several exhibition areas, research facilities, an auditorium, conference rooms, a bookstore and a café.
The project is led by OMA partners Ellen van Loon and Rem Koolhaas in collaboration with project managers Chris van Duijn and Dirk Peters. Van Loon and Koolhaas’s previous collaborations include the design of the new aquarium and science center in Hamburg, the headquarters of NM Rothschild & Sons in London, the redevelopment of Mercati Generali in Rome and the completion of Porto’s Casa da Musica and the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin.

Burj Dubai, the iconic high-rise developed by Dubai-based Emaar Properties PJSC, has surpassed the height of the KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota, USA, to become the world’s tallest man-made structure. Burj Dubai is now 629 metres (2,063.6 ft) high while KVLY-TV, which holds the record for the world’s tallest supported structure since 1963, has a height of 628.8 metres (2,063 ft).
Burj Dubai is already the world’s tallest building and tallest free-standing structure, and at 160 storeys, is taller than Taipei 101 (508 metres; 1667 ft) in Taiwan and CN Tower (553.33 metres; 1815.5 ft) in Toronto, Canada. Burj Dubai is billed to meet all four criteria listed by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which classifies the world’s tallest structures. CTBUH measures the height of buildings to the structural top, the highest occupied floor, the top of the roof and the tip of the spire, pinnacle, antenna, mast or flag pole.
Emaar is partnering with South Korean construction major Samsung Corporation and New York-based Project Manager Turner Construction in constructing Burj Dubai, which was designed by Adrian Smith and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill of Chicago.

World Expo Shanghai has chosen up to 55 projects – almost twice the expected number – to exhibit in the Urban Best Practices Area of the Expo site, organizers announced yesterday.
A local green building project, called “Eco-house in Shanghai,” is among them. The building, now located in city’s southwest Xinzhuang area of Minhang District, will be rebuilt in the Expo site to demonstrate the energy efficiency concept.

Sometime in 2011, three twisting towers are set to shoot up along a man-made creek in the desert sheikhdom of Dubai.
Bent at the waist, the Signature Towers will be the work of the Pritzker prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, who, with fellow Pritzker winners Norman Foster and Frank Gehry, is leading an architect rush to the Emirates.
“We are trying things out for the first time which we wanted to try out, but couldn’t,” said Patrik Schumacher, a partner at Zaha Hadid Architects. “We have found an unusual degree of receptiveness to new ideas in the Gulf.”
The Persian Gulf is home to more than $2 trillion worth of construction projects, fueled by a quadrupling of oil prices over the last five years. As the Gulf states – home to about 40 percent of the world’s proven crude-oil reserves – seek to diversify away from hydrocarbons, their appetite for landmark buildings is growing.
