Brown Boveri Square | Baden Switzerland | Schmid Landschaftsarchitekten
The formerly enclosed working area of  Brown Boveri & Cie, where in the past turbines and electrical motors were manufactured, to be converted to a lively urban square. However, even in this new configuration, the heritage of the Place can still be perceived. The Brown Boveri-Square is being transformed from an industrial to a cultural square; culture meaning also “cultivating”, since a classical tree formation outlines the square, leaving the center free. A further refinement of the new public space is achieved through the use of decorative casting moulds, which are conceived as a development of the well-known industrial steel applications.

The project fulfils the transformation of the place and reveals its given qualities exclusively in landscape architectural means. The movement of pedestrians flows over a wide open tree square: both diagonally as well as along the façades of the surrounding buildings. The entrance platform of the Trafohalle, the most important attractor of the place, is seen as an elevated balcony overlooking the square. The openness and flexibility of the square allows the future placement of artworks or art interventions. The landscape architectural project establishes a platform and
basis for Art in public space. Art itself is however not the object of this project.

The Square is framed by a matrix of robust, high‐branched and light urban trees. Honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides) are mixed
freely as if a necklace of beads run around the square. The tree matrix is enhanced selectively by a small number of ancient tree species in order to create ambiental densities. On the other hand the center of the square remains open, at the disposal different cultural events and flexible concerning delivery traffic. Brown Boveri-‐Square is primary a Square for the Everyday: a transit place of wide publicity, a place for having lunch, for waiting for a movie outside the Trafohalle, a meeting point near the central train station.
