The four finalist teams recently unveiled their visions for Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition (MR|DC), the largest landscape and urban design competition in Minneapolis history, each crafting a multidimensional landscape and urban design proposal addressing 220 acres of parkland and surrounding neighborhoods along 11 miles of riverfront from the historic Stone Arch Bridge north to the city limits.
Ken Smith Workshop – City of the River
The river is a catalyst for renewal through new and enhanced park, infrastructure and ecological systems and a series of bold, iconic design scenarios that reflect the area’s history and spirit of place.
Stoss Landscape Urbanism – Streamlines
A longer term transformation that reclaims the river as civic space, introduces new landscapes, infrastructure and urban fabrics, and weaves the multiple new and existing systems and experiences back into the city.
TLS/KVA – RiverFirst
A set of inter related design initiatives – focused on health, mobility and green economy – that function at multiple scales and are enhanced by community outreach strategies to raise public awareness about consumer choice impacts on the river system.
Turenscape – The Resilient River
A fifty year framework for investment that focuses on: ecological renewal, social equity, new economies and a new identity for the city of the river, and includes a strategic approach to ecological infrastructure, re-orienting urbanism and phasing over time.

Recently TOPOTEK1 was part of the winning team for Amagerforbraending Waste-to-Energy Plant international design competition. The winning submission stated that the site directly north of the main entrance to the Amagerforbrændingen (Copenhagen) should be used for recreational purposes in the future. The team propose to create topography as a natural continuation of the artificial mountain meadows on the roof. If the roof is the glacier – the park is the green meadow in the valley. The landscape has been modeled in a way so it offers informal sport activities in summer as in winter. The materials are simple and robust to make sure the costs for construction and maintenance is kept reasonable.
The design team included BIG, realities:united AKT, TOPOTEK1 & Man Made Land, Glessner Group. The building is 95,000s square metres and the Landscape is 90,000 square metres.

Craig Guthrie recently joined the Melbourne office of HASSELL as Principal. Guthrie, an internationally recognised landscape architect and urban designer with more than 18 years experience. He has attracted international recognition for his work throughout Australia, China, Korea and the Middle East. His recent international experience in the United Arab Emirates spans high profile projects such as Masdar City, one of the world’s most sustainable urban developments, Saadiyat Island Cultural District, renowned for its significant civic and cultural institutions (designed by Pritzker prize-winning architects) and the Dubai 2020 Master Plan.
The Landscape Urbanism vs New Urbanism debate has been burning along for the last few months with LAND Reader – LU vs NU synopsis back in November. Leon Neyfakh of the Boston Globe has recently published Green Building that adds more fuel to the LU vs NU fire.
Its an interesting article worth the read but one line(amongst many) that stayed with me was “We criticized it and called out all the contradictions, and we laughed and we made fun of him,” Duany recalled about showing a lecture delivered by Charles Waldheim. Is Landscape Urbanism vs New Urbanism about theory and how to make great places for people or more about ego?
Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates(MVVA) recently presented the update plans for the Gateway Arch upgrade and a new estimate of $578.5 million was announced almost double the 2009 estimate (Parks Estimate before the Design Competition). The design has been updated since MVVA won the competition in September and has added key features such as the aerial gondola and a ‘lid’ on the I-70 interstate road.
